National Benchmark Test 2024-2025
National Benchmark Test 2024-2025

In South Africa, a set of standardized tests called the National Benchmark Test (NBT) are used to determine whether or not students are ready for higher education. The National Benchmark Test Project (NBTP) currently administers the exam, which debuted in 2008.
- The objective of the NBT is to evaluate students’ academic abilities in three key areas: Mathematics, quantitative literacy, and academic literacy The Quantitative Literacy test measures students’ ability to apply mathematical concepts in real-world situations, while the Academic Literacy test measures students’ ability to read and comprehend academic texts. Students’ mathematical proficiency in algebra, trigonometry, and geometry is measured by the Mathematics test.
The NBT is not an entrance exam; rather, it is a tool that colleges and universities use to find students who might need more academic help to succeed in their chosen programs. A student’s eligibility for tertiary education is determined using the test scores and other academic criteria, such as high school results.
The NBT is typically required of students prior to or during their college or university application, and the results are valid for two years. The NBT is offered a few times each year at assigned testing communities across South Africa and can be taken in one or the other English or Afrikaans, contingent upon the understudy’s inclination.
Overall, the NBT helps to bridge the gap between high school and university education by ensuring that South African tertiary institutions can provide students with the support and resources they need to succeed academically.
